Baba Kalyani, a soft-spoken IPS officer, is quite different from the tough cops on the silver screen. His methods of investigation are also different. Mohanlal is doing the title role of `Baba Kalyani,' directed by Shaji Kailas, the shooting of which is going on inside the majestic Kalappurackal Bungalow in Kochi.
"It can't be called a film about a cop. Moreover, it is not a loud or an action-packed film. Baba Kalyani, head of an anti-terrorist wing, is on the lookout for the culprits who have hatched a deadly plot against the country. He reaches Kochi in pursuit of the criminals. Some time later, he occupies the first floor of this huge house, where an old lady lives. She reminds Baba of his mother. Baba was so attached to his mother that he adopted his deceased mother's name as his surname," says Shaji Kailas.

Breaking the mould

Viewers generally associate Shaji Kailas' name with fast, action-packed movies. "I hate being branded. Moreover, I have made comedies and narrated sensitive themes as well. I believe in keeping the attention of the audience glued to the screen with beautiful frames and a gripping story. I keep the viewers guessing and want them to be in tune with the pace of the film," he adds.

Mohanlal, in his police uniform, is unearthing the mystery behind a theft. Cinematographer Shaji goes in for a trolley shot. Jagathy Sreekumar is SI Remanan.
According to scenarist S.N. Swami, `Baba Kalyani' is a wholesome entertainer. The hero is "subtle, intelligent and is not the kind who gets enraged on the slightest pretext. Like my earlier films, a definite tempo or a mood will be there throughout the film," he says.

Mamta on song

Mamta, the heroine, says, "It's a sort of re-launch for me after six months." She plays Madhumitha, a lawyer. Mamata has almost completed `Sivappathigaram' in Tamil with Vishal and is all set to start `Atta' in Telugu, with Siddharth. But she has more reasons to celebrate as she has just sung the title song for `Rakhi,' composed by Devi Sri Prasad.

The editing of `Baba Kalyani' is being done the non-linear way or in simple terms, "on the spot," by Don Max. "It's very effective as we know the duration of what has been filmed. It also helps in planning the next shot," he says.

`Baba Kalyani' is produced under the banner of Ashirwad films by Antony Perumbavoor. Lyrics are by Vayalar Sarat Chandra Varma, music is by Alex Paul and stills are by Shajil Obscura. The film will be released by Christmas.
