After Smart City, which was a city based action movie, scenarist-turned-director B. Unnikrishnan takes us, in his second directorial venture Madambi, to the heart of a village. In a village named Ilavattam there lives a man by the name of Gopalakrishna Pillai. He is a man with diverse qualities. Basically he is a moneylender, but not the avaricious kind. He lends money at very low interest-rates but makes it a point to get his money back on the date agreed upon. And if there is any delay, he even becomes extremely harsh.
Another aspect of his personality is that he runs a tuition centre, where he teaches Malayalam to young students, in an earnest attempt to instill in them a love for their mother tongue, which he considers to be of supreme importance. Gopalakrishna Pillai is also someone who leaves no stone unturned to fight injustice of any kind. The story takes a turn when a bank, named Grand Bank opens up in the village, offering to give out loans at very low interest. The manager of the bank is a young lady named Jayalakshmi. She has made her entry into the village with a very definite purpose. All this, plus the very different kind of bonding between Gopalakrishna Pillai and his mother, form the plot, which develops towards a very interesting climax.
Mohanlal plays Gopalakrishna Pillai while Kavya Madhavan becomes Jayalakshmi. This is for the first time that Kavya is being cast opposite Mohanlal, though she had earlier acted alongside him in Onnaman and Vadakkumnathan. Ajmal Ameer, who was introduced in Pranayakaalam and who later played a key role in the Tamil film Anjathe, does the role of Gopalakrishna Pillai's younger brother Ramakrishnan. Along with three songs penned by Gireesh Puthencherry and set to tune by M. Jayachandran, the film also features a poem penned by Anil Panachooran. Produced under the banner of Surya Movies, Madambi will be brought to the theatres by Vaishakha Release.
